How to Find the Best Haircut for Your Face Shape
Best Haircut for Every Face Shape
Many guys don’t often think twice when it comes to their haircut. For a lot of us, we have our “usual” or we occasionally (emphasis on occasionally) attempt our take on something that’s recently graced a recent red carpet or perhaps our Instagram feed — and there’s nothing wrong with that. After all, if you own it, you can rock it, right? Not always.

But keep in mind, that’s not to say your barber won’t do their best to attempt to get any hairstyle to work with your face, and according to Daniel Lee of Blind Barber Chicago, when it comes to matching haircuts to your head shape: “It isn't [always] a one-size-fits-all kind of a thing but [when done expertly] it can help highlight good, prominent features while minimizing the ones you want to hide.”
The next time you head to your barber, use this guide to match your face shape with a haircut to optimize your look.
Best Haircut for Oval Faces: Slicked Back
Face Shape: Longer than it is wide.
Best Haircut: Almost anything. According to Lee this is the holy grail of head shapes. “You’re a lucky son of a b*tch that can rock any hairstyle,” he says. “Go crazy.”
Best Haircut for Long Faces: Crew Cut
Face Shape: Similar to oval but with a longer chin.
Best Haircut: Anything from a shorter cut such as a crew cut to a style slightly longer can work for this shape. “Building some weight on the sides or even keeping the sides a bit longer you can help add width to your silhouette,” Lee adds saying that this helps prevent your face from appearing too narrow.
Best Haircut for Square Faces: Buzz Cut
Face Shape: Strong angles with a similar width cheekbones and jawline.
Best Haircut: “Most haircuts will work with this shape as long as the corners are rounded out,” says Lee. Jimenez’s go-to recommendations are shorter styles: “Buzz cuts or classic crew cuts [work] because they help to balance the roundness of the head with the angular face.”
Best Haircut for Heart-Shaped Faces: Shadow Taper
Face Shape: Pointy chin with wider cheekbones.
Best Haircut: For this shape, Jimenez prefers something with just a touch of weight such as a high- or medium-fade with fringe or a classic greaser style. He notes: “[Facial hair] can offset the narrower bottom half of the face by adding a bit of bulk.” However, Lee cautions about getting too heavy up top. “Adding too much weight as you go up could make the chin look even smaller.”

Best Haircut for Diamond Faces: Tapered Sides, Long Front
Face Shape: Similar to long face but with strong angles and wide cheekbones.
Best Haircut: Because of the angular features of the face, men with this face shape typically opt for a tapered side and a high volume long top.
Best Haircut for Round Faces: Pompadour Fade
Face Shape: Length and width are the same with soft edges.
Best Haircut: “A cut that is tighter on the bottom with more weight and length as you get higher is perfect,” says Jimenez. Depending on hair type, a short textured fade or side-swept pomp with tapered sides is ideal as “height in the hair will elongate the shape to minimize the look of roundness,” according to Lee.
Best Haircut for Triangle Faces: Brush Up
Face Shape: Jaw is wider than cheekbones.
Best Haircut: Because of the wider-set cheekbones, Jimenez typically recommends either clean shaven or very short facial hair. “[That’s ] in addition to a tight fade with either a crew cut or even medium length on top to help balance out the faces proportions.”
Keep in mind that these are all suggestions, as there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to what you want to do with your hair.
