Most Talked About Breakups of 2020

For better or worse, we thrive in a celebrity-worshipping culture. We can’t help but wonder about the lives of our most famous actors and actresses, singers, athletes, and entertainers, often experiencing their ups and downs, their wins and losses, as our own.

This was true before social media, but the newfound feeling of constant, one-on-one access that sites like Instagram and Twitter give us to our favorite celebrities has only fueled our curiosity, eager to learn more while sharing our own thoughts, hopes, and criticism.

This past year was a rough one for everyone, but for these celebrity couples in particular, 2020 brought catastrophe. Engagements were broken off, marriages ended, and in a few cases, minor lockdown love affairs came to an end.

Without question, these were 2020’s most talked about celebrity breakups.

Cardi B & Offset

Few breakups in the last year could possibly top the split between rappers Cardi B and Offset, if only because neither of them were shy about the details. Three years of marriage almost came to an end in September with divorce filings, but it’s not like their relationship was super stable to begin with — within months of their marriage in 2017, rumors of infidelity were already flying. Cardi had taken a lot of flak for her decision to stand by Offset in the past (most of it in response to a now-infamous Cosmopolitan interview), but she also did something very few celebrities willingly do, and took responsibility for her own role in the breakup: “It’s not right, what he f*cking did – but people don’t know what I did, ‘cause I ain’t no angel.” Maybe that self-reflection is behind her last-minute (and much talked about) decision to call off the divorce and try to reconcile their marital problems.

Fans of The X-Files have been not-so-secretly jealous of British screenwriter, playwright, and creator of the mega-popular Netflix series The Crown, but not for any of his professional accomplishments. For four years, he was the lucky boyfriend of Gillian Anderson, who portrayed British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the very show he created. Unfortunately, it seems like the lockdown has claimed another relationship, as sources close to the couple have reported they’ve split up. What this means for the future of Anderson’s Margaret Thatcher is anyone’s guess.

Tyler Perry took to Instagram to announce his split from his long-time girlfriend and mother of his son, Gelila Bekele, and he did it in the most Tyler Perry way possible: posting a gym selfie with a little monologue that’s simultaneously funny and endearing. “This is what a midlife crisis looks like,” it began, ending with a promise to be the best man and father he can be, and to embrace this new, single chapter of his life with enthusiasm. It’s raw honesty, and we appreciate that.

 Iggy Azalea & Playboi CartiGettyImages

One of rap’s most famous couples split up a few months ago, though it took fans a while to piece together the series of cryptic social media stories that amounted to an announcement. “People take loyalty for granted & that’s why I’d rather be alone,” Azalea wrote on an Instagram story, which has led many people to speculate that Playboi lived up to his name and cheated. When fans pressed her, she was more direct: “What I meant last night was that I’m raising my son alone & I’m not in a relationship” – another celebrity romance down.

Luke Evans & Rafa OlarraGettyImages

Some breakups are loud, messy, and very public, particularly in the age of social media, but others are quiet and kept under the radar. So it was with actor Luke Evans, who recently unfollowed his former boyfriend, art director (and tri-athlete!) Rafa Olarra, before scrubbing his social media of pictures and videos of the two of them. Funnily enough, though Evans didn’t use social media to share news of the breakup, he did start the relationship off by sharing footage of the two of them together in romantic Hawaii just earlier this year.

Oh, what a sad casualty of 2020. The relationship between funnyman Jason Sudeikis and the beautiful and talented Olivia Wilde began all the way back in 2012 (remember that innocent time?!), and for the past seven years the couple have been making the rest of us “aww” at their chemistry and cuteness. Their sparks began over a series of brief encounters, mostly centered around their professional commitments, but when Jason finally got the courage to ask Olivia out, things really took off. They’re split now, but as they share a son and daughter together, and both are committed to co-parenting.

NBA fans have long been rooting for Lamar Odom, the retired Laker who has had some very public struggles with drugs and addiction in the years since his retirement, so news that he and his former fiancé, the beautiful personal trainer Sabrina Parr, have called it off has many of us worried. Parr shared the sad news on an Instagram story, leaving us with a cryptic message about Odom having “some things that he alone needs to work through,” so we’re all hoping L.O. stays strong, and maybe there’s an opportunity for reconciliation in their future.

This one hurt. For years now, fans have watched Johnny Galecki bumble his way through romance as one of the main characters of the hit series The Big Bang Theory, but it was always a comfort to know that Galecki only played a clueless nerd on television, and that in real life he was suave and charming enough to land the beautiful (and much younger) Alaina Meyer, with whom he has a son. Their romance was brief, beginning only in 2018, but given how long 2020 is taking to end, we can only assume it felt much longer to them.

One of the year’s most subtle breakup announcements belongs to This Is Us star Susan Kelechi, who springboarded off of the social media celebrations over Joe Biden’s presidential victory to announce that she’s single and ready to mingle, writing, “And I thought becoming single was gonna be the only eventful thing to happen to me this year #TwentyTwenty.” Shortly after this announcement, she deleted all photo evidence that she ever dated former Blue Bloods actor Jaime Lincoln Smith.

Gerard Butler and Morgan Brown attends the 92nd Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood and Highland on February 09, 2020 in Hollywood, CaliforniaKevork Djansezian/Getty Images

Actor Gerard Butler and real estate developer Morgan Brown were an inspirational power couple, balancing highly demanding careers and hectic work schedules with PDA-filled public outings to beaches and restaurants for more than six years, but all that came to an end in August, and we suspect their total lack of free time and commitment to their respective careers is to blame. Butler told PEOPLE that he’s enjoying being single, but can’t find the time to date: “I have no personal life,” he lamented. There’s a lesson here, fellas, and it starts with work-life balance.

Actor Actor Rob Riggle and his wife Tiffany Riggle attend the Los Angeles Special Screening of "Just Before I Go" at Wood & Vine on April 20, 2015 in Hollywood, CaliforniaAngela Weiss/Getty Images

Breakups are always terrible, but divorces in particular suck, and while things haven’t been finalized (yet) between actor Rob Riggle and his wife of more than 20 years, former fashion industry maven Tiffany Riggle, divorce papers have been filed, and it isn’t looking good — they don’t call use the phrase “irreconcilable differences” lightly.

Gianna Santos and Jonah Hill attend Editions de Parfums Frdric Malle x Violet Grey celebrate Rose & Cuir at San Vicente Bungalows on November 07, 2019 in West Hollywood, CaliforniaRachel Murray/Getty Images

Jonah Hill has had one of the most unlikely developments of any modern actor, making a name for himself in raunchy comedies like Superbad and Knocked Up before developing into a serious actor delivering top-notch performances opposite A-listers like Brad Pitt (Moneyball) and Leonardo Di Caprio (The Wolf of Wall Street). When he announced his engagement to Gianna Santos, most of us assumed he was completing his adult phase in style, but the couple announced an amicable breakup in October, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be getting back together.

Kate Beckinsale & Goody GraceGettyImages

The relationship between British bombshell actress Kate Beckinsale and Manitoba-born Canadian rapper Goody Grace was always an unlikely one — Beckinsale is more than twice as old as the baby-faced Canuck — but it was cute while it lasted. The romance apparently began in April, shortly after the lockdown, and was wholesome enough for Kate to drop an “I love you” under Goody’s birthday Instagram post. They’re probably not the only “lockdown” couple out there, but that doesn’t make their breakup any less sad.

Recording artist Miley Cyrus, honoree Gigi Hadid (L) and singer Cody Simpson attend The DAILY FRONT ROW "Fashion Los Angeles Awards" Show at Sunset Tower on January 22, 2015 in West Hollywood, California Charley Gallay/Getty Images

An entire generation of men grew up watching Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana, and that kind of emotional investment doesn’t just go away. A lot of people were hopeful that her relationship to Australian singer, songwriter, and all-around hunk Cody Simpson would stick, especially after it was revealed that Simpson had been helping her battle her substance addiction and live a healthier, more sober lifestyle. Sadly, sources close to the couple confirmed things ended, amicably, in August, after ten months of heated romance.

Another famous celebrity relationship failed the quarantine stress test. The Green Bay Packers quarterback and former professional racecar driver were first romantically linked in early 2018, and have been inseparable ever since, leaving social media and their respective fans all the more shocked when a spokesperson for the couple announced their separation. Patrick no longer even follows Rodgers on Instagram, though if you know the post-breakup rules, you’d know that’s just good protocol.

The relationship between former The O.C. heartthrob Rachel Bilson and Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live alum and current star/creator of hit HBO show Barry, had fans of both celebs happy, as it seemed like a match made in wholesome, quirky heaven. Alas, it was not to be. Representatives of both stars have confirmed that, six months after sparks first flew, the pair have called it quits.

Actor Thomas Middleditch (L) and set costumer Mollie Gates attends the 23rd Annual Critics' Choice Awards on January 11, 2018 in Santa Monica, CaliforniaJoe Scarnici/Getty Images

The marriage between Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch and former costume designer Mollie Gates has been much discussed since a 2019 Playboy interview in which Middleditch described opening up their marriage to other sexual partners. “To be honest, swinging has saved our marriage,” he confided. Alas, whether it helped or hurt their relationship we will never know, since Mollie filed for divorce proceedings earlier this year. Their breakup has become a battleground for a larger question: is polyamory the future, or is monogamy here to stay?
